Greetings from The Music Bowl! I'm the Wonderfish.
This is our first week posting, so some introductions are in order. Let's start at the beginning, shall we? Our story begins on a street called State. Heard set sail from Europe when he was just a wee lad. His family settled in the small village of Dolgeville, which is in upstate New York in the USA. As luck would have it, and unbeknownst to Heard, his family moved into a house on State Street, an infamously musical street in the town. Historically, quite a few residents from State Street used their musical abilities to make a living, but that is a post for another day. Heard's new neighbors happened to be one of those families.
Enter the Wonderfish. That's me, I'm a Wonderfish! My younger sister and I were raised in a musical family. I knew from an early age that I would learn how to play musical instruments. I had my first drum set at age 4 (thanks, Dad). I also knew that someday I would be a writer because I used to write on the drum heads of my first drum set (you're welcome, Dad). My mother played the piano and the clarinet and my father was a part time musician. On any given Saturday afternoon, you could easily find my sister and I at a random venue somewhere in the county helping our father setup his drums and band equipment for his next gig. We sang, we danced, we played instruments, and if we had all the cousins together you would have thought you were witnessing the American-Italian version of the Von Trapp Family Singers. Heard thought exactly that.
As my sister and I saw our father performing and playing gigs throughout the week, year after year, we thought we would try it, too. So we did. And we still do. And Heard saw us and decided he wanted to try it, too. So he did. And he still does. And now we get to work together on music projects! One such project was a local cover band called, you guessed it (or maybe you didn't), Heard and The Wonderfish. This band was where Heard's viking helmet made its first appearance. It's been with us ever since. He just can't seem to part with it. I was honored to be one of three Wonderfish in that ensemble. Even though the band isn't able to perform much nowadays, I still love being an original Wonderfish.
Heard and I decided to embark on another music project this year. Thus, our website was born. Our blog series, The Music Bowl, has every intention of being an interesting take on music today and music from the past. We want to try out various musical ideas and we want you to join us on our journey. Starting out, Heard will post every Monday and I, the Wonderfish, will post every Thursday.
So, here we are, just over 20 years from Heard's historic voyage across the Atlantic. We're having a blast creating The Music Bowl and we hope you enjoy reading it. Shark's in the water! See you next week!
